Yes it is worth it, I spend most of my time playing careers in single player. The way single player career works with planes, if a squadron uses one of your planes at any historical date, you can join it and fly missions with it from that date on; if the squadron later switches to plane you don't have, you can transfer to another squadron or skip ahead until it again switches to a plane you have.
Or buy the plane by DLC.By the game page, the starting planes are:French: Nieuport 17 and SPAD XIII - early career and late career planes. You can't play them in one career without buying SPAD 7 (?), but you can make early and late career. Adventures of pip walkthrough 1. Or skip few months of 1917.British: Sopwith Camel, S.E.5a and Felixstowe. All were used till the end of the war by different squadrons, so you can choose your plane type and fly it for rest of career.German: Albatros D.Va, Fokker Dr.I Fokker D.VII and Pfalz D.XII. The first three were used in that succession by most German squadron, so you pick squadron that flies Albatros and proceed through planes you have until war ends.
Fourth is more specialised, possibly worth a career of its own.American: Nieuport 28, Spad XIII - two of three planes Americans used, once you start you can fly for rest of career.Belgian: Nieuport 17, SPAD XIII, Sopwitch Camel (may be replaced with new Belgian plane in larter update). All Belgian squadrons fly N.17, then switch either to Camel or SPAD 7 (needs DLC), then to SPAD XII. Originally posted by:Beta career mode????But if this game was released in 2009 why the campaign still in beta?because are not interested in the multiplayer wait for that the game complete prior to think about buyingShort answer - because devs are not pleased with it enough to call it finished product and stop improving it.Long answer: Campaign was not part of original 2009 release, it was added on the fly in simple 'Beta' form and is constantly being developed; new functions and improvements are added in most game updates. There is always more historical content to add, new planes, mission types, squadron deployments. WWI was so rich I doubt the game will ever be 'finished'; they'll just have to stop adding things at one moment.
